We understand that there has been some confusion and skepticism surrounding the process of obtaining Irish citizenship through a Irish Association or Descent. To clarify, this is a genuine application process permissible under the Irish Nationality and Citizenship Act 1956. The only time there is a legal entitlement to Citizenship through a great -grandparent is when the Parent (grandchild of the Irish Born Citizen) was registered as an Irish Citizen through the Foreign Birth Registry prior to the Applicant’s birth. This Applicant can then pursue an application for recognition of their Irish Citizens through the same Foreign Birth Registration process. If the Parent was not registered prior to the Applicant’s birth, then they lose the legal entitlement to Citizenship and the only alternative open to them is to pursue an application for Naturalisation through Irish Association, if they can demonstrate links to Ireland through descent and association.
The Legal Basis for Irish Citizenship Through Irish Association or Descent
Irish law allows individuals to apply for citizenship if they have an Irish-born parent, grandparent, or, in certain circumstances, great-grandparents.
In applications based on Irish Association, in addition to proving your Irish Descent, it is important to demonstrate your strong Irish Associations. This should include documentary evidence which supports your real and tangible connection to Ireland in all areas such as cultural, educational, economic, social sectors or have contributed to the State or Irish society in other ways.
The Minister for Justice will consider these applications and will decide whether or not to use Ministerial discretion to grant Irish Citizenship. You can find more information directly on the Irish Government’s official website.
Addressing Misconceptions
There have been misconceptions online suggesting that securing Irish citizenship through Irish Association or Descent e.g. great-grandparents is not a viable option. This is not the case. While the process is more complex compared to having a direct Irish-born parent or grandparent, it is entirely legitimate when the necessary conditions are met.
