Citizens of the countries listed below do not need a visa to travel to Ireland. However, please keep in mind that there could be exceptions.

Do I Need a Visa to Enter Ireland if I’m from China, India, Nigeria, Russia, Turkey, or the UAE?

Where Can I Apply for an Irish Visa?

You can apply for a visa at the ISD website. This Irish government platform allows you to complete your application, submit documents, and track your visa status. You will need to create an account, choose the type of visa you need, and complete the application form. Before you begin, check the specific visa requirements for your country of residence.

How Long Will It Take to Process My Visa?

The type of visa you are applying for and your country of residence will impact how long it takes to process your visa. On average, visa applications. Planning ahead and submitting your application well in advance of your intended travel date can help avoid interruption of your travel plans.

Can I Apply for an Irish Visa from a Country That Is Not My Country of Residence?

In most cases, you must apply for an Irish visa from your country of residence. If you try to apply from a country other than where you live, your application could be delayed or rejected.
There are a few exceptional circumstances where you might be permitted to apply from another country, but these are rare and typically require specific approval. If you are unsure, you should discuss your matter with the Irish embassy or consulate in your country of residence (This is possible once they can prove a legal residence in the Country they are applying from).

Do Children Need a Visa to Enter Ireland?

Each child needs a visa if they travel with you to Ireland. While some countries allow children to travel on a parent’s visa, Ireland requires children to apply for a separate visa in their name. The fee for a child’s visa is the same as the fee for an adult visa. This rule applies regardless of the child’s age, so even infants or young children must have their own visa approval.

Can I Travel to the UK or Northern Ireland with an Irish Visa?

A visa for the Republic of Ireland does not allow you to travel to the UK or Northern Ireland. Even though Ireland and Northern Ireland are geographically close, these regions’ visa requirements differ.
If you plan to travel to both Ireland and the UK, you will need two separate visas—an Irish visa for Ireland and a UK visa for entry into the UK. This means that you will need to complete two visa applications, meet different requirements, and pay for both visa fees.
If you’re planning to enter Ireland first, you can apply for a multiple-entry Irish visa to re-enter Ireland multiple times. However, you will still need a UK visa for travel beyond Ireland.
If you live in Northern Ireland and hold a valid UK visa, you cannot use your UK visa to enter the Republic of Ireland. You need to hold a valid Irish visa even if you’re only entering for a short amount of time.

Can I Use a Schengen Visa to Travel to Ireland?

Ireland is not part of the Schengen Area; therefore, you must apply for an Irish visa separately, even if you hold a valid one. Ireland operates its own visa system, and the requirements for entry are separate from those of Schengen member states.

Can I Apply for an Irish Visa if I Have a Criminal Record?

You can apply for an Irish visa with a criminal record however full disclosure of your criminal history is mandatory during the application process. If you have a criminal record that includes serious offences or multiple breaches of immigration laws, your visa application could be rejected. Transparency is crucial in the visa approval process, so it is essential to be honest about your history.

Do I Need to Apply for Residency or Permission to Remain as a Family Member of an Irish Citizen?

If you are the:

  • parent of an Irish citizen child
  • married to
    · in a civil partnership with or
    · in a long-term relationship with an Irish national

you must apply for residency or permission to remain in Ireland. As a parent of an Irish citizen, you may be eligible for permanent residency. If you are a non-EEA national in a relationship with an Irish citizen, you must also apply for permission to stay in Ireland.

How Do I Apply for Irish Citizenship?

To apply for Irish naturalisation or citizenship, you must have lived in Ireland for at least five years out of the last nine. There are strict requirements for citizenship applications, including proof of good character and sufficient residence. Additionally, the application is decided at the discretion of the Minister for Justice.

Do I need to apply for a work permit?

A non-EEA national who has been granted permission to remain in Ireland on one of the following grounds does not need to apply for a work visa:

  • Permission to remain as a spouse or dependant of an Irish/EEA national
  • Permission to remain as the parent of an Irish citizen
  • Temporary leave to remain on humanitarian grounds, having been through the asylum process
  • Explicit permission from the Department of Justice and Equality to remain as a resident and employer in Ireland
  • Permission to be in the state as a registered student who is permitted to work 20 hours during term time and 40 hours during holiday periods
  • Permission to be in the state under the terms of the Diplomatic Relations and Immunities Act 1967, and are assigned to a mission of a country with whom the government has entered into a working dependents agreement
  • Swiss nationals in accordance with the terms of the European Communities and Swiss Confederation Act 2001

All other non-EEA nationals are required to make an application for an Irish work visa.

What are the penalties of working without a relevant permit?

Under the Employment Permits Act, it is a criminal offence for a non-EU/EEA national to work without an employment permit.
Penalties, including a fine of up to €250,000 can be enforced on parties who breach regulations.

What is a Van der Elst visa?
