Join your Irish citizen family member in Ireland
If your spouse, partner, parent, or child is an Irish national, you may be eligible to live with them in Ireland through the Join Family Visa process.
This route allows certain non-EEA family members to reunite with Irish citizens, provided they meet the eligibility requirements and can demonstrate a genuine and durable family connection.
Applications are assessed based on the nature of your relationship with the Irish national — for example, whether you are a spouse, de facto partner, parent, or dependent child. Each category follows its own set of conditions and documentation requirements.
Before applying, it’s important to review the most recent Family Reunification Policy Document issued by the Department of Justice, as this outlines the current qualifying criteria and any financial and residence conditions that apply.
Who can apply to join an Irish citizen
Spouse or Civil Partner
If you are married to or in a registered civil partnership with an Irish citizen, you may apply to live with your spouse in Ireland. You will need to prove the authenticity of your marriage or partnership, provide supporting documentation, and show that your Irish partner is residing or intends to reside in Ireland. Successful applicants are granted a D class entry visa and must then register for a residence permission to live and, in some cases, work in Ireland.
De Facto Partner
If you are in a long-term committed relationship with an Irish citizen but not legally married, you may be eligible to apply as a de facto partner. You must demonstrate that you have been in a genuine relationship and living together for a minimum of two years prior to the application.
Evidence such as joint tenancy agreements, shared financial responsibilities, and communication records are essential.
Parent of an Irish Citizen
Parents of Irish nationals can apply to join their child in Ireland. However, additional qualifying conditions apply — including proof of dependency and evidence that the Irish citizen can financially support the parent. A minimum income threshold often applies to ensure the sponsor can provide accommodation and meet living expenses in Ireland.
Child of an Irish Citizen
Children of Irish nationals may qualify if they are:
- Under 18 years old; or
- Over 18 but in full-time education and financially dependent on the Irish parent.
Proof of dependency, education enrolment, and the child’s living arrangements must be provided as part of the application.
Other Family Members
Extended or non-nuclear family members (such as siblings, adult dependents, or other relatives) may, in certain exceptional cases, be permitted to join an Irish citizen if they can demonstrate dependency and strong personal or financial ties. These applications are discretionary and require detailed supporting evidence.
Proof of dependency, education enrolment, and the child’s living arrangements must be provided as part of the application.
Supporting documents
Applicants are generally required to provide:
- A valid passport and visa (if applicable)
- Birth, marriage, or partnership certificates proving relationship
- Proof of Irish citizenship for the sponsor (passport or birth certificate)
- Evidence of residence in Ireland (rental agreement, utility bills, etc.)
- Financial documents showing the sponsor’s ability to support the applicant
- Proof of medical insurance
- Police clearance certificates from all countries of residence
What happens after approval
Once your Join Family application is approved, you’ll receive a visa to enter Ireland. You will need to register with the Garda National Immigration Bureau (GNIB) or local immigration office to obtain your residence card once you arrive. Depending on your visa type and family category, your permission may allow you to work or study in Ireland.
